i ran across this a couple of years ago….

a terrible rendition of O Holy Night!

i passed it off to my team and school as a recording i made.  i even got the Superintendent of Cy-Fair ISD to play it for a principals meeting.  my principal came back saying that i was famous, but that the boss said maybe she might not want to renew my contract.  all joking aside, i’ve always wanted to make a video of it, that or see the original dude who did it.  there are now several on YouTube, but i think this guy is the best.  i mean what pain, i mean passion he sings with.

i hope you enjoy.

i wrote about beauty the other day….

but only posted pictures of what I thought was beautiful.

that only catches a glimpse of beauty for me, so i thought i would backtrack and actually share things i find beautiful.

the first would have to be this piece of music which has captivated me since i first heard it in middle school.  It’s the Agnus Dei set to Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

in the same vein that i find that hauntingly beautiful, i also find this song.

i find great beauty in the words of e.e. cummings

i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
wich is natural which is infinite which is yes

(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun’s birthday;this is the birth
day of life and love and wings:and of the gay
great happening illimitably earth)

how should tasting touching hearing seeing
breathing any-lifted from the no
of all nothing-human merely being
doubt unimaginable You?

(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)

i take great pleasure in the art of Barton Damer

and of Wassily Kandinsky

Mark Rothko

and Jackson Pollock

i adore the scripts of playwrights Horton Foote, David Mamet, & Tom Stoppard

i love the cinematic mastery of Alfred Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers

i find beautiful the dark prose of Cormac McCarthy

“He walked out in the gray light and stood and he saw for a brief moment the absolute truth of the world. The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe. And somewhere two hunted animals trembling like ground-foxes in their cover. Borrowed time and borrowed world and borrowed eyes with which to sorrow it.”

and i find amazing the wonderful words of William Shakespeare.

If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumber’d here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
if you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to ‘scape the serpent’s tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be friends,
And Robin shall restore amends

those are a few things i find beautiful.  i always look for the beauty and the redemptive qualities in anything i view.  art is created by broken people and although it sometimes is not “family friendly” it can still hold beauty.   all art eventually points me to what is behind the beauty.  it’s not the destination, it just points me in the right direction.

Beauty….

what do you think of when you think of beauty?

art?

architecture?

music?

nature?

literature?

film?

something clicks within us when we behold beauty.  the things that capture our eye and heart transcend to our souls.

C.S. Lewis says it like this:

“The book or the music in which we thought the beauty was located will betray us if we trust to them; it was not in them, it only came through them, and what came through them was longing…..They are not the thing itself; they are only a scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never visited.”

what is pointing you towards true beauty today?

when i was watching Return of the Jedi…

i was wondering how in the heck the Ewoks could beat the finest troops in the Imperial Army?  it’s funny because the Clones are awesome warriors and the Stormtroopers are often seen as bumbling fools who shout out the “Wilhelm Scream”.  this video clears a lot up.

well it’s funny anyway.
